Commander 2014 At The Hidden Lair
One of my favorite formats for Magic The Gathering is Commander. The rules are pretty simple, you construct a 100 card deck and are only allowed one of each non-basic land card. You have a commander, a legendary creature, that you can summon from your general zone. Each time that commander, or general, dies he costs an additional two colorless mana. He also does count as 1 of your 100 cards. Commander is normally a format played outside of Friday Night Magic, however, it can be played for FNM, or like our store it is played after the events ends. The Hidden Lair does have a Commander League that plays over a series of weeks having a total prize payout at the end. Last year’s Commander Decks were such a hit that Wizards of the Coast has produced its third year of Commander Decks. Unlike last year, these decks are Mono-Color and they have planeswalkers as Commanders! Yup, Planeswalkers! The Five decks are Guided by Nature, Forged in Stone, Sworn to Darkness, Built from Scratch, and Peer Through Time. You can read all about these decks at The Hidden Lair’s blog where Joshua W. Andrew Craig Brown in Fantastic Mr. Fox by Tobias Picker
Fantastic Mr. Fox in an opera that premiered at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion on December 9, 1998 by Los Angeles Opera. Composed by Tobias Picker, this three act piece is based on Roald Dahl’s Children’s novel with the same name. This is a greatly family friendly opera that has a good friend of mine, Andrew Craig Brown as Farmer Boggis!

The Hidden Lair has just reached it’s 1 year anniversary with Andy Still at the helm. We have had a very successful year and seen growth in just about every area of the business. Part of our success can be attributed to the great deals and prizes we offer up to our customers. We firmly believe the store is a representation of the gamers that play there. As a kid I can remember spending a lot of my teen years at the local gaming store and this helped shape who I am today. I’m very proud to provide a place where kids can hang out in a great environment and learn while having fun doing so. Saturday has turned into an amazing day with games such as Pokemon, Yu-gi-oh, Dice Masters, Magic the Gathering and Free play using The Hidden Lair Demo Shelf. The demo shelf is filled with free games that can be played at anytime. Although the store will be closed on Thanksgiving, Andy does have some really great deals planned for this weekend. Pokémon Tournaments in Decatur, IL
The gaming shop in Decatur, IL, The Hidden Lair, is now running Pokémon tournaments weekly. The store has been doing Friday Night Magic for Decatur gamers since the store opened last year. Events also being held are Kaijudo, Yu-Gi-Oh, Heroclix, and Dice Masters.
The Decatur Zombie 5K is back!
Friends of the Decatur Public Library is hosting the second annual Zombie 5k run/walk in Fairview Park. All ages are welcome and the registration fee of $20.00 will cover shirt, dog tag, and admission to the post race party. You will also be helping the Friends of the Decatur Public Library which is a non-profit organization. I personally will be donating to the event, but will be out of town and unable to participate. The Hidden Lair and Quality Home Locator will be doing some advertising at the event as well. Look for their booth to get your free swag. There will be free items to hand out that day as well as people to teach some of the hottest new games on the market. Tags will be given to runners that will be used as protection from the infectious zombies lurking around the park. Don’t let your brains be eaten by the zombie horde terrorizing Fairview Park. If you are planning to run please sign up through active.com or in person by May 24th in order to get a T-shirt. Registration in person can be done at the Second Saturday book sale April 12th and May 10th from 9:30-12:30. The last day for registration will be Friday, June 6th, 2014. The group is also looking for Zombies! If you wish to be a Zombie the only thing you need to do is come to the 5:30pm meeting on June 2nd at the library. Quality Home Locator Hires Kim Linn
Kim Linn, was hired by Quality Home Locator earlier this year. This was announced on the website back in February. Information about how to reach her can be found on the companies press release. Kim has been an amazing help to the company in so many ways. Her main role is to assist Property Management Clients and tenants both at Millikin University Housing and Single Family Housing. She is filling homes up for the 2014-2015 Millikin University School year, and we do have a few 3 and 4 bedroom homes for single family use. The American Garage Minute- Garden Prep
The American Garage is a collaboration between Bradshaw Consulting, Inc. and 3D Houston. The show, filmed in Texas, is about the American know how and spirit of ingenuity. Season 1 of American Garage was based on repairing a David Bradley Tractor using a product of mine which can repair a cast iron tractor, called Castaloy. Season 2, which is currently under production, centers around the creation of a BBQ pit. I’m personally planning to do one of these in my back yard so I’m very excited the producers picked this topic out of the long list of requests by viewers. The American Garage Minute was started as a way to address questions from viewers that did not require a full season to address. So when some guys over at gardentractortalk.com wanted to see the tractor in action, this was the perfect vehicle to do so. I would like to note he has the good fortune of not being snowed in… but instead, is outside getting a garden ready.
Mt Zion Dance-A-Thon
Recently, a local dance studio, Studio B, has decided to do some fundraising to help raise money for one of my alumni from Eisenhower High School who is battling a reoccurring cancer. One of those that I graduated with contacted me about this great opportunity to help others. Studio B, in Mt Zion, IL is hosting a dance-a-thon, a 50/50 raffle, a silent auction, and a food & bake sale. They are hoping to raise $10,000 to help this young mom out. Bradshaw Consulting was able to help by donating a website with free hosting. Please consider attending this event to bid on items in the auction, purchase some baked goods, or just donate something to help them raise money. The event will be held at the old Salem School in Long Creek, IL on Jan 25th, 2014 from 9 am to 5 pm. Friday Night Magic
The Hidden Lair has been open for about 2 months at its new location and the decatur gamers love it! I was recently interviewed about a card game called Magic The Gathering. The store has not carried this game since the mid to late 90′s and since the release of Friday Night Magic, it has changed dramatically. Since the purchase of our plaza, which also houses Bradshaw Consulting, Inc., Quality Home Locator, and Wilhoit Accounting and Tax Service, we have much more space to host this weekly event. Now, due to our new and improved space, the decision was made to pick this game back up and provide a place for local magic players to play. Andy, the store manager, expressed the need for this in the Decatur, IL area. Because my goal all along for the shop has been to provide a place for young adults, like my kids and adults like myself, to have a location where they can go and enjoy each others company, it just made sense to begin hosting this event. The store also runs tournaments for Yu-Gi-Oh, Heroclix, and Kaijudo. Yu-Gi-Oh has been around for quite some time and we already have a large following for this very popular event on Sunday’s at 1:00. Heroclix is still up and coming, but is Andy’s all time favorite. Stop in anytime and he will get you going with this exciting game. One of the best things about Heroclix is the low cost to create a winning team as well as it’s detailed figures from all different genres. Kaijudo is a game based on the Saturday morning cartoon and is great for kids 8+ years of age. While the Kaijudo tournament is hosted, we have a big screen TV that plays Kaijudo for the players to watch. Kaijudo tournaments run every Saturday from 11-2. The January newsletter was posted on the stores website today and announced the addition of new league play rules. Andy and I plan to post more details about that on The Hidden Lair website over the next few days. We are also getting these scheduled for Born of the Gods, which has a pre-release weekend schedule for the end of this month.
